Writing Your Own Wedding Vows

Wedding vows are an important part of your wedding ceremony and are chosen as a way to express your feelings for your partner. Although some couples still go with traditional vows, more and more couples are choosing to write their own. Here are some simple tips to help you express your love for your intended when words seem to escape you.

Make Sure You Both Want to Write Your Own Vows

While writing your own vows is a very popular thing that adds a very personal touch to your ceremony, it has to be something that you both want to do. Keep in mind that while some may be good at putting their feelings into words, others are not. Your wedding ceremony should not be a time for either of you to feel self conscious and uncomfortable.

Not everyone feels comfortable expressing their feelings in front of a crowd of people. Be sensitive to your partner's feelings about writing your own vows. If it's not something that you both want to do, consider going with more traditional wedding vows.

Make the Vows Uniquely "You"

The reasons you've chosen to write your own vows is to give you the opportunity to show your spouse how much they mean to you. It should not be a contest to see who can write the best vows. Write it in a style that is yours and not something you've copied from a book. These are your wedding vows and they should be what you want them to be but try to keep them on the short side. No one wants to hear a novel.

What to Write in Your Wedding Vows

What to write in your vows is definitely a matter of personal choice. Look at traditional vows and make a note of what you like and don't like about them. Many sites online offer excellent ideas on what to write. While these may not be your own words, they can give you ideas and you can alter them to fit your feelings. They're just meant to be used as guidelines, not to "copy and paste", although some couples actually do that!

If there's something special that you love and appreciate about your partner, your wedding vows are the perfect way to express it. Although wedding vows are probably the most treasured part of your ceremony, they're not legally required so you can opt to eliminate them altogether. However, few couples take this option. They've waited so long for the opportunity to let the world know (and their partner) how special their partner is, they don't want to give up the opportunity.

Be creative in what you put in your vows. If there is a special song you both like, consider inserting lines from the song but in your own words. If there is a poem that's very appropriate for your feelings, you may wish to read it to your partner. Writing your own vows need not be a stressful or difficult thing. Just speak from your heart.
